Portal doors

The all-glass doors of a non-disturbing minimalist design mediate the contact of the sacred space with the outside world. They allow casual passers-by to peer inside, inviting them to visit. At dusk, when the church interior is illuminated, this experience is very impressive.

At closer look, the atypical classical handle evoking the shape of a vessel – water – is striking and also follows the shape of the altar in the presbytery. The pair of doves on the glass of the door leaf is used here as a symbol suggesting the fundamental unity of an active and contemplative life in every human being.

The entire prototype door construction fills a 4 x 4m opening and is realized as an all-glass – frameless made of tempered thermally insulating double glazing, where most of the hardware is hidden in the cavity between the glass panes. The complexity of the design solution was further increased by the legislative requirement to equip the door with panic hardware and a large atypical handle made of polished aluminium. The sashes are mounted on bearing hinges due to their heavy weight, the edges of the glass are protected by subtle vertical polished stainless steel profiles. Other door fittings are complemented by the mandatory kick plates in balotinated stainless steel and markings in the form of stripes and doves in the glass surface.
